The Urban Environment

My withered Window
My Urban Environment

For my project I decided to have a look at this withered, decayed, old window mainly because out of all the pictures i had taken around the city this was the one that stood out the most. Then when i went back to do a few observational drawings i just got suck in from there.

After doing a few observational drawings of the window i began to experiment with drawings on different mediums.... newspapers,really light papers, masking tape, fabrics.etc

After doing this i started to look at old fabrics that i found and masking tapes. This was one of the first drawings i done of the window using ripped up crepe paper and pen. Although it was only a quick drawing i liked it and from there i started experimenting. Mainly with layers of crepe paper placed on top of newspapers and soaked with tea bags...

After this i moved on to fabric and i began to do a lot of drawings in pen rather then pencils what i would usually use...
I started taken bits from my observational drawing and placing it in random places....to make different patterns and different effects..
I really liked working with the masking
tapes and working into them to blend all the individual parts into one piece

After doing a lot of pieces using different materials i decided to do two big pieces with all the different mediums together......fabrics, tea stains, weaved paper, masking tapes...etc

At the same time while doing my contextual notebook i started looking at collage artists and cubism artists and tried to combine the two styles..

While looking at various cubism artists i became interested in lines and squares. I done a few drawings on white paint and salt to create a bit of texture.

After doing this i wanted to return to the window to take a closer look at all the smaller details in the window.....all the cracks and crevices.

I  decided after doing a lot of 2D drawings to work on a bit of 3D to represent my window. The first thing i done was a large scale styra foam window. I had done this at the beginning of the project and was happy with it then but after exploring my theme a bit further i though i could push my 3D work a bit further. So i made a wooden window which represented my 2D work better......
I tried to make it look decayed like the original window but to represent the work that i had been doing on my project so far. In the centre i tried to show i was interested in cubism by layering wooden squares on top of each other. After it had been constructed i tried to decay it by chiselling into the edges and then burning it with a blow torch.
